Does CPCB really not set a COD limit for dairy effluent?
Correct — the official Schedule VI Sr. No. 56 table specifies pH, BOD, suspended solids, and oil & grease, but no COD figure. Some vendor and blog pages quote a generic 250 mg/L COD figure that appears to be borrowed from the general industrial standard rather than the dairy-specific one. In practice, your SPCB's Consent to Operate may still specify a COD limit for your site, so this is a "check your CTO" item, not a blanket rule.
Why does UASB performance vary so much between plants?
Temperature and sludge age are the two biggest swing factors published in the literature — the same reactor design can range from roughly 60% to over 90% COD removal depending on operating temperature and how mature (well-granulated) the anaerobic sludge is. This is why commissioning a UASB properly includes a sludge acclimatization period, not just a mechanical startup.
Is biogas from a dairy ETP actually worth capturing?
For plants processing enough milk to generate a steady, sizeable COD load, yes — captured biogas is commonly used as boiler fuel to offset LPG/furnace oil. For smaller or highly seasonal operations, the capital cost of gas handling equipment may not pay back as quickly; it's a plant-specific economics question we work through during design.
